When a Bubba is not a Bubba

February 24, 2010 · 4 Comments

Here's a different twist on my lunch ride as I was heading over to Limecreek Road for a 40 minute SST interval when I'm on Anderson Mill warming up. I started to ratchet up my speed a bit. I shift up to the 53T and start to pick up speed. I'm going about 21 mph when I hear someone shouting at me. I look to my left and there's a big truck with the passenger window rolled down and the driver leaning over to yell at me. My first thought was one of despair as I thought for sure this could escalate into a confrontation. However what he says next leaves me stunned. He says "I'm impressed, you're going over 20 mph, Good Job!"

I gave a little chuckle and tell him thanks as he speeds off. So was this a cyclist in a Bubba truck or a real Bubba who's turning over a new leaf?

We can be happy he was simply a decent person no matter which flavor. Fabulous!

He had just watched Breaking Away at the last truck stop. Well, probably not.

    Cool anyway.

Reminds me of the time I was riding north of Waxahachie and a truck with two young men in it swerved towards me to give me a fright. They both laughed and sped off. To the LONG traffic light at the bottom of the hill.

They were still laughing when I caught up with them. They quit laughing and started worrying when I stuck my head in the passengers window and asked in my calm, adrenaline fueled voice just what the heck they thought they were doing.

It was a downhill false flat and I had a tail wind for the mile to catch up with them. I hit 26 mph to make the light and confront them. From that point on they waved and cheered me on every time they saw me. I guess I impressed them.

Not bad for a 60 year old.
